When Rancid's ...And Out Come the Wolves came out in 1995 I remember just about everyone loved "Time Bomb" and could sing along to "Ruby Soho" (I mean even the cheerleaders loved that song!) but to me nothing was as awesome as Matt Freeman's bass solo in "Maxwell Murder". I remember the first time I heard it my jaw was on the floor (I had never heard a bass played like that). After that moment I was like an apostle, cornering just about anyone who would listen and practically forcing people to hear that bass solo. I still can't get enough of it.
This song remains one of my favorite openings to an album of all time. Not too many times do you hear a song that sets the tone more perfectly for an album than this track. From the ambient noise of the song's beginning straight into the jolt of bass, drums and vocals to that awesome solo this song just gets it right.
